EU To Release New Immigration Policy in October

To help fight the worsening case of immigration in Italy and other part of Europe, the European Union will issue new policy proposals by the end of October, says Swedens Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.

The said news was announced in a conference held in Rimini, italy.

"We will have a first proposal from the EU with regard to distribution criteria for immigration flows among the 27 (EU member states)," says Bildt.

The new policies were expected to ease the problem in immigration in Europe especially in Italy where thousands of illegal immigrants flew to the country and work and live as illegal alien.

We must consider this a European problem. The EU has made many statements ... but has not yet said just what should happen when a group of migrants reaches the borders of Europe," Franco Frattini told a news conference.

Italy has asked Malta to let it take over sea rescues and surveillance in some Maltese waters where most illegal immigrants from different countries cross, saying that Maltese was incapable in doing their job properly.

However, Malta government refused to agree with the proposal.

"We continue to believe the talks which have been going on for 10 years with Malta over that area of sea are indispensable for the whole international community," Frattini said.

Some 36,900 illegal immigrants arrived in Italy by boat last year, a rise of 75 percent from 2007, according to the Interior Ministry.
