Non-EU doctors Not Welcome in UK
- Maria Theresa S. Samante Email this article

Doctors from non-European Union (EU) member countries are barred from applying for a postgraduate training post in the United Kingdom (UK) as stated in the new immigration rules laid by the Home Office.

The new immigration rules were arranged due to the condemnation of local doctors since they cannot find jobs after obtaining their degree from UK medical schools. The new rule will not allow foreign doctors to apply for foundation and specialty training posts.

Foreign doctors who have been working in UK through the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) will not be affected by he new rule. The rules only apply to those foreign doctors who are not UK resident.

Meanwhile the Government will launch guidance consultation for doctors who are already in UK through the HSMP. Under the new rule, they will only be hired if none of the UK or EU doctors qualifies for the post.

According to the Court of Appeal, the guidance was unlawful. But the Government is still firm with their petition and the case is still on hearing by the House of Lords. The decision is expected to be released in May.

The new immigration rules are expected to affect the recruitment in 2009. It is expected to reduce an estimate of 3,000 to 5,000 overseas applications. Estimatedly, there are around 10,000 non-EU medical graduates currently staying in UK.
